Introducing the efforts of the Heisei 30 learning town collaboration project.
In order to create attractive communities and solve local issues, universities and students are invited to work on projects in collaboration with the local community, and subsidies are provided for excellent initiatives. We would like to inform you about this year's initiatives.
【Activities】Ryukoku University Fukakusa Machiya Cinema (Fushimi / Fukakusa Community Archive Project)
"Fukakusa Machiya Cinema" by Matsuura Seminar of the Faculty of Policy Studies, Ryukoku University, is an organization that mainly collects and archives 8mm film in order to preserve for future generations the videos and photos of the Showa period of Fushimi Ward, which is lying dormant in the area, and to provide opportunities for elderly people living alone who tend to be isolated to go out. We visited the venues, Fukakusa Elementary School and Ryukoku University.
At Fukakusa Elementary School, the Fukakusa Social Welfare Council held a "Fureai Salon" for the purpose of interaction between the elderly in the community. Under the theme of "Fushimi and the streetcar," photos from the Showa era and photos from the same place today were projected on a screen, and memories of that time were shared while comparing.
The student who moderated the event asked "How much was the fare back then?" and "What was your childhood play?" The participants replied to these questions while talking nostalgically with the people around them.
At the "2nd Machiya Cinema" held at Ryukoku University, footage of the time when streetcars were running was shown, and Mr. Shizuji Fukuda, who has been shooting streetcars in Kyoto, explained about it. In addition, a participant who used the streetcar at that time talked about the memory of sound, such as "I used the sound of the first streetcar as a clock," and when private cars were not so popular among citizens, streetcars were inexpensive and could ride far distances at a flat fare, which was a valuable means of transportation for citizens, but "Before the closure of the railway, there were many accidents with trucks and buses due to the increased traffic volume of cars." I was also able to learn about the problems that have arisen with the changing times.
The activities of the group, which is celebrating its fifth full year this year, seem to be warmly welcomed by the local people, saying, "It's fun to see the faces of young people." The students expressed their aspirations to develop the activity from "learning about the past" to "passing on Showa culture" to children living in the area in the future.

【Activities】 Halloween in Saiin Lantern Making Workshop
The "Halloween in Saiin Executive Committee" of Kyoto University of Foreign Studies visited the venue of the lantern-making workshop because it is possible to interact with local residents and provide children with fun and peace of mind through the "Halloween Parade in Saiin" to be held on Sunday, October 28, as well as children's hall workshops and lantern-making workshops.
At 13:00, the start of the event, the Kyoto Family 3rd floor "Kyo Famigarden" was crowded with many participants, mainly children. Choose your favorite pumpkin and hollow out the inside… Parents and students from the executive committee helped out in the difficult parts, and the lanterns with rich individuality were completed. Not only could you take home the lanterns you made, but there were also gifts of candles. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the lights will be lit.
Easy-to-understand instructions and tools are prepared even for those who are trying to make lanterns for the first time, and they seem to be very accustomed to it, such as helping participants as soon as they see participants with troubled expressions. When I talked to the students of the executive committee, they said that they had been active even before they applied for the Gakumachi Collaboration Project. Now, when he meets local people near the university, they tell him that he is a Halloween child.
Since many of the students who are currently active are third-year students, the handover to the second- and first-year students is an issue. We hope that it will become established among the local community as a Halloween event of Saiin. Also, last year, the parade was canceled due to an approaching typhoon, so I pray for the success of "Halloween Parade in West Temple"!

【Activities】Ryukoku University-Higashitakasegawa Environmental Protection and Jizo Bon Project Team
The "Fushimi Fukakusa-Higashitakasegawa Environmental Protection and Jizo Bon Project Team," a project team of Ryukoku University Junior College, plans and manages river cleanup activities and the "Jizo Basin Program" in cooperation with the local community and involving high school students in order to pass on local traditional events to the next generation and to improve the environment of the Higashitakase River, which will be the venue. We have received an activity report, so we would like to introduce it.
◎Promotion of exchange of traditional events progresses to workshop on "disaster prevention map"
The continuation of the traditional event deepened the bonds between the residents and the Kawakubo Town Residents' Association, which gained momentum to create a "disaster prevention map." Therefore, on October 2, the residents' association conducted fieldwork in the town with students from Ryukoku University and Kyoto Kogakuin High School.
On this day, the locations of the "fire extinguisher" and "fire hydrant" installed by the residents' association were plotted on a map to reconfirm the temporary meeting place in the event of an emergency evacuation. Information on elderly homes is provided on the map by the residents' association. The first workshop was held in a fulfilling atmosphere, with university students providing support based on their knowledge of social welfare, and high school students sharing ideas from hardware aspects such as building and road conditions based on their engineering expertise.

【Activities】Kamo Cinema Executive Committee
On Saturday, August 18th, we went to Kamo River Cleaning and Outdoor Film Screening at "Kamo Cinema 14"!
It was 16 years ago that Ritsumeikan University students who were interested in the conservation of the Kamo River, which plays a major role in creating a landscape unique to Kyoto, established the Kamo Cinema Executive Committee. For 14 years since its inception, as part of its efforts to raise awareness of beautification among young people, it has held Kamogawa cleanup activities, projects that students are interested in, and outdoor movie screenings after sunset every summer.
"Kamo Cinema 14" started with the Kamogawa Riverside Clean Hike, which was renamed "Picakamo". From this year, a new project called "Kamogawa de Asobo" has been added, and you can enjoy the Kamo River in a leisurely and bright time while playing a game using water.
The expression of Kamo River, which changes from daylight to sunset, is also an attraction of "Kamo Cinema". The screen dimly projected in the dark was fantastic. When the sun went down, customers brought leisure sheets one after another.
This year's screening is "Seto Utsumi." "Seto" and "Utsumi" are simple movies about two high school students talking by the river. However, in the conversation, the worries, thoughts, and love affairs unique to high school students are realistically depicted. In the sense that you can say your true feelings where water flows, the screening at Kamogawa is perfect. Under the starry sky with a pleasant breeze, I was able to spend a luxurious time sitting on the riverbed and watching a movie only once a year.
The Kamo Cinema Executive Committee not only holds outdoor film screenings, but also participates in events and cleanup activities organized by the cooperative organization Kamo River Beautification Association, deepening exchanges with local residents. They have also been able to establish cooperative relationships with companies. Please continue your activities so that those who participate can enjoy themselves and raise awareness of the beautification and conservation of the Kamo River!

【Activities】Kyoto Tachibana University Society of Contemporary Business Urban Development Study Group
On Saturday, August 18, we visited the "Kiyomizu-yaki Painting Experience Workshop" as part of the activities of the "Daigo Nakayama Danchi Revitalization Project" by the Kyoto Tachibana University Society of Contemporary Business Urban Development Study Group!
In this project, volunteers from the Faculty of Contemporary Business at Kyoto Tachibana University have been engaged in various activities since last year, mainly at the "Daigo Nakayama Danchi Ceramic Lantern" with the neighborhood federation and other local people in order to promote regional exchange in the Daigo Nakayama Danchi.
The "Ceramic Lantern Road" implemented in the Yamashina area has a history of more than 10 years, but the cityscape illuminated by pottery lights is beautiful and has been very popular. The idea of implementing this "Ceramic Lantern" in the Daigo Nakayama Complex led to the start of the initiative last year.
The "Kiyomizu-yaki Painting Experience Workshop" is positioned as a pre-event of the "Ceramic Lantern Road" named after pottery, and the elderly and children in the community happily created accessories with their own designs. After the workshop, various projects were held until the evening, such as soap bubble play in the park and authentic somen noodles made by cutting bamboo from the back mountain with the cooperation of the Kyoto University of Education Takeyukai.
On November 3rd, the "Ceramic Lantern Road" at the Daigo Nakayama Complex is scheduled. Last year, the scope of the event was reduced due to bad weather, but this year we are blessed with good weather and we hope that the project will be a success!

【Activities】Ryukoku University Yodo Honmachi Shopping Street Fureai Library Project
On Sunday, August 5, we visited the library opening of Ryukoku University's Yodo Honmachi Shopping Street Fureai Library Project.
In this project, students of the Inoue seminar of the Faculty of Policy Studies, Ryukoku University, have been conducting on-site surveys since FY29 with the aim of revitalizing shopping streets that are losing their vitality due to a decrease in customer attraction and diluting local communities. Perhaps because bookstores in the shopping district were closed, we learned that there was a high need for libraries in the Yodo area, and we have been preparing for the opening of libraries at vacant stores in the shopping street.
It was a grand opening with a performance by the brass band club of the local Oyodo Junior High School. In addition to displaying books donated by students and local residents, the library also has a bookmark-making corner and a café space, which can be used as a place for interaction among local people. On this day, people from the local area who were provided with books also stopped by and looked inside with great interest and conversed with the students.
Since this is their first attempt, students visit the nearest children's hall or elementary school, distribute leaflets, and conduct public relations activities through trial and error.
In the future, in addition to the monthly library, they are planning to develop joint products with people in the shopping district and publish free papers. I hope that you will steadily move forward step by step so that the charms of the Yodo area can be conveyed to people inside and outside the region!

【Activities】Bukkyo University Waku Waku Laboratory
On Thursday, August 2, we visited the "Children's Science Class" by the "Waku Waku Laboratory" active in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City.
The "Waku Waku Laboratory" is run by seminar students led by Associate Professor Toyosei Hirata of the Faculty of Education, Bukkyo University. Once a month, we hold a science experiment class for elementary school students in the vicinity of Kitano Shopping Street with the aim of revitalizing the community, supporting children's learning, creating a place to belong, and intergenerational exchange.
This time, it was held as part of the summer vacation Terakoya event at Zest Oike, leaving the usual Kitano area. The theme is "Let's explore fossils with Zest Ammonite".
The marble used in the passage of Zest Oike is filled with fossils of 150,000-year-old ammonites, belemnites (bone-like tissues at the end of the heads of bandits), and other single-celled organisms. The children were guided by the students and were enthusiastically exploring the fossils on the ground.
After searching for fossils, we made fossil replicas. It is made by pouring resin into a plastic mold of your favorite fossil. Many of the seminar students aspire to become teachers, and they have gained experience in teaching practice, so they skillfully attracted the interest of the children while guiding them.
In addition, there are many spots in Kyoto City where similar fossils can be seen (Kyoto Station underground shopping mall Porta, The Museum of Kyoto, Kyoto Central Post Office, Sanjusangendo Hall, etc.). Please look for it when you go out. Places that you usually pass casually will turn into something interesting. I believe that the children were able to deepen their interest in science from a familiar place.
The Children's Science Class will continue to be held every month at Ninwa Kaikan in Kamigyo Ward.
